RGV Youth Preparedness
2017

Congratulations!

RGV MRC Weslaco High School Chapter has two students chosen for the
TEXAS YOUTH PREPAREDNESS COUNCIL

It is an honor to annouce that Amanda Borjas and Ana Martinez, from our RGV MRC Weslaco High School Chapter, have been chosen to serve on the Texas Youth Preparedness Council for 2017.

The Texas Youth Preparedness Council brings together youth leaders from across the state who are interested in emergency preparedness and making their communities more resilient in the face of potential disasters. We hope that this council provides you an opportunity to enhance your knowledge of emergency preparedness and develop leadership skills that will help you in addressing and supporting the needs your community.

As a member of the Texas Youth Preparedness Council, they will be expected to complete a self-selected emergency preparedness project. They will also be encouraged to voice your opinions, experiences, ideas, solutions, and questions on youth disaster preparedness with the leadership of state and local organizations working on emergency preparedness. Being selected to serve on the Texas Youth Preparedness Council is an honor, but it is also a significant responsibility that requires dedication and commitment. The term for Amanda and Ana will begin December 1, 2016 and expire November 30, 2017.

The Weslaco Fire Department, RGV Youth Preparedness, and RGV Medical Reserve Corps will be here to assist you on your emergency preparedness project. Excellent job ladies!

Disaster Preparedness
Our Youth are a vital part of our community projects. They have helped us reach hundreds of our citizens just in 2016 and even more in 2015. We have participated in the Vial of Life Program, Home Fire Preparedness Program, discussed stroke recogntion, and even handed out bottled water because it is so important to our health.
Every month we train on disaster preparedness and public health. We have covered Incident Command, National Incident Management Systems, stroke care and recognition, and setup of our mobile shelter. We plan on having more classes and excerises every month.
The Weslaco Fire Department created the Emergency Medical Regional Response Team (EMRRT) for disasters. The Rio Grande Valley Medical Reserve Corps plays a vital part of that team. Our youth are training to be an important part of that team.
Our Program Sponsor
Our volunteer programs would not be here today if not for the support from the Commissioners, Mayor, and Manager of the City of Weslaco. They have allowed the Weslaco Fire Department to be proactive in the City and across the Rio Grande Valley. The Weslaco Fire Chief first introduce the Medical Reserve Corps, CERT, and the Emergency Medical Regional Response Team back in 2007.
